Narrative of the Young Shepherd

Deep within the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of rams.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, guarding his charges inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.

Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no beast.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations website as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to earn back. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
